Speaking Spanish brings connection through communication, understanding through cultural experience, and freedom through vulnerability to learn as a child would learn. We create community. This is why our mission is to have people speaking Spanish confidently so that they can have heart-to-heart connections that lead to greater understanding and tolerance for people. Welcome and bienvenidos! My name is LeAnna. I offer private one-on-one Spanish tutoring lessons for ages 4 to adult. All lessons are 60 minutes in length and done online via zoom. For children 6 years old and younger, I offer 30 minute lessons. I specialize in beginner and intermediate level, but I also teach more advanced students. All levels are welcomed! As an artist and teacher for over 15 years, I have a much different and fun approach to teaching Spanish!
In one lesson we cover grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening comprehension and conversation but… it is done in context. Firstly, Spanish is taught as a whole, secondly, as a full-immersion experience, thirdly as play-based and fourthly, without judgement. Lastly, our lessons are intended to have you speaking with confidence! Find out more as to how my lessons are different to everyone else you find online.

“LeAnna is a joyful Spirit, and she brings that spirit of fun and enthusiasm to teaching Spanish. She tailors the lessons to the needs of the student and the specific skill level. It was always clear that she came prepared to each session. LeAnna offers a variety of modalities for learning such as reading, writing, singing and, of course, speaking which stimulates the learning process. Whoever takes the opportunity to work with her will be in for a fun and creative learning experience.”

Sadly, I hear too often that people don’t speak a foreign language because they are afraid that other people will make fun of them. Either they make a mistake with a word, or their pronunciation is off. I have no tolerance for that, which is why this is a judgement-free zone!
When we judge ourselves, we close down our expression and even our openness to learning. When we know we are not being judged, we feel like we are safe, and we take more risks. To learn a new language, you have to risk “sounding stupid” and make mistakes. Besides, who cares! If that is part of the process, why not do it in a judgement-free zone?
Often foreign languages, especially Spanish, are taught in isolation. For example – first you learn your numbers, then you have one entire lesson on colors, then another lesson on -AR verbs in present tense. Did you learn English this way as a child? No way! You learned your numbers and colors by counting the green leaves on the tree. You learned verbs and nouns from ordering food, and learned adjectives from wanting to describe the tastes in your mouth. You learned in context through your senses and experiencing life. This is why I focus on context, so you get the most out of your lessons.
Fun first. Perfection later! Children learn while playing, and so do adults! When we have more fun, we have an aptitude for learning and participating freely in learning Spanish. When it is a game, we are more engaged and then learn through our direct experience. This is a successful approach that is being more incorporated into education across the board. This could include card games, memory games, puppets, songs, dance and much more! No matter what the age, come play and have fun learning Spanish!
My intention is to have all of my students speaking confidently in Spanish without hesitation or fear of mistakes. This is why our lessons are not bilingual (in English translating into Spanish), but rather full immersion, meaning 90% of the target language is spoken for the duration of the lesson. This is to take off the training wheels and put you in a situation where you are fully immersed in Spanish as much as possible. Most importantly, this is part of experiential learning to fully engage you in your learning.
Maybe you want to learn Spanish so you can travel to a Spanish-speaking country. Perhaps you would like to communicate with others in Spanish at work. Potentially you have Spanish credits to complete in school so you can graduate. Or possibly you would like to order Mexican food at your local taqueria like a boss! There are many reasons to learn Spanish, but more importantly, there is a need to speak Spanish, to have a complete conversation. I get you ready to speak without fear and set you up right to have a conversation!

LeAnna is a good teacher to start with and I’ve learnt a lot from her. LeAnna is a very easy-going and encouraging instructor. She would try to find something good in me every time and appreciate it. She would also find something I was doing wrong and point it out directly, instead of letting it vanish in the appreciation. So I feel energized and know what to improve at the same time.

“The lessons we received from LeAnna Sharp provided a foundation for my daughter’s interest in Spanish and we highly recommend her as a teacher. LeAnna taught me and my 4 year old daughter Spanish and it was a wonderful experience. My daughter still asks about Pinky, one of the puppet characters LeAnna created to engage with her. This was effective and entertaining, for both of us.
As an instructor, LeAnna organized our lessons and used methods that made it clear she was an experienced instructor. She built each week’s lesson plan based on what we had achieved in the previous lesson and shared the plans and corresponding online resources.
LeAnna’s special skill as a teacher was putting us at ease while keeping the focus on speaking in Spanish. Because she was friendly and not judgmental, it felt okay to make mistakes which meant I tried to speak in Spanish much more. We learned useful phrases and vocabulary that we used around the house for everyday conversation. It turned out I already knew some Spanish and I was surprised by the vocabulary words that came back to me. We were very comfortable being tutored by LeAnna online and I highly recommend her. She has a lot to offer.”

where my grandparents and aunts from my mother’s side only spoke Spanish. My father is German-American. My mother is El Salvadoran. My formal Spanish education began at San Francisco State University, and then later at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, in Santiago, Chile.
Over the years, I have worked with bilingual Latino theatre companies and musical performance groups. Upon returning from South America, I went into teaching Spanish for elementary school children. I was the lead Spanish teacher and Program Director at the i-Immersion Institute in San Francisco, CA, an after school full immersion language program for children K-5th grade.
In Los Angeles, CA, I worked in video post production as a production manager producing videos with foreign language subtitles, overseeing the three translation teams in Spanish, Bulgarian and Portuguese, and also as the final subtitles translator/editor. I am currently in training to become an official English-Spanish Translator and Interpreter.
